Today has been the typical winter Lajes weather...rain and VERY windy. Sometimes up to 50mph. At one point we heard a noise and couldn't decide if it was the wind or a plane engine! We started our day early at the fitness center where we did our cardio while looking out a panoramic window at the ocean! We ate some breakfast in the room and spent our day getting acclimated. The highlight of our day was picking up our car we are borrowing from our sponsor. This gives a new meaning to compact car! The funny thing is that no one looks at you funny or laughs at you because they look just as goofy. When Justin's truck gets here (Feb 9) it will look really big! We also got our Portuguese drivers licence and Lindsay got a Portuguese ID that allows me to be here long term. Without a registered ID i am only authorized to be here 90 days with a passport. We also joined the officers club and met the staff that Justin will be working with. He will be the Wing Protocol Officer which will be fun, yet a challenge. Pretty much he deals with arrangements for DV's (distinguished visitors)and will work in the Wing Headquarters building. We also got our housing assignment today and will be moved in next Thursday, 21 Jan. We have a 4 bedroom,2.5 bath house and it it not too bad. I will get some pics of that when we move in and get settled. You know me I need to get it decorated before I take pics! One of our shipments has arrived and we will get it next week when we move..we are still waiting on 2 more. This evening we went off the island (on our own) and found and ate at the Pizza Press and paid for our first thing in euros. Our meal was 10,70 euros which is about 16 dollars. We exchanged money today and 100 dollars was worth 66,30 euros. In other words the euro is more valuable than the dollar. Over all we had a good day and were learnig more each day. Hope you enjoy the pics! FYI I changed my settings so this should post with the time it is here.
