Faith, Fish, Earth, and Cheese

Friday, July 9th, was filled with many adventures. We started the day at 10:00am with a tour around the island. Our first stop was at the only pottery shop on the island, Olavia Simas. We were able to see the artist craft some of his pottery and purchase a few pieces. Next stop was at the local cheese factory, Querjo Vaquinha. Here we tasted four different types of cheese and saw the cheese making process. After tasting, we chose our favorite cheese and brought home a sample. The third stop was at a local ceramic shop, Azularte, where tiles and pottery are made. We visited with the owner and brought home some complimentary goodies, along with our purchases. After all of that fun we went to a village, Sao Mateus, and enjoyed lunch at Beira-Mar. Before lunch we stopped by the dock where the fishermen bring in the local fresh catches. Justin enjoyed looking at all the fish and watching the boats being unloaded. At lunch we all enjoyed a local catch of Hake fish. Some ate it grilled and some fried but it was all good. After lunch we enjoyed ice cream and coffee. The final stop was at the tallest church on the island, St. Matthews Catholic Church. This church dates back to the 1600's and was really neat to see. At the conclusion of the tour we headed back to the base for a cookout. Everyone who attended the cookout was asked to wear a jersey or clothing to represent their favorite sports team. Needless to say, Clemson was represented well! After a long day everyone is tired and resting up for more adventures tomorrow!
